Tilly the Tiny Tamarin's Big Jungle Day
A nonfiction-inspired story for kids (ages 5–9)
In the heart of a green rainforest, where the trees stretch up to tickle the clouds, lived a tiny monkey named Tilly. She was a golden lion tamarin—no bigger than a squirrel—with a bright orange mane that puffed around her face like a little sun.
Tilly was curious. More curious than any other tamarin in her troop. While most monkeys loved napping in the branches or nibbling on fruit, Tilly liked to explore.
One sunny morning, Tilly heard a sound she had never heard before—chomp, chomp, chomp. It wasn’t a bird. It wasn’t a frog. It sounded like…teeth!
Following the noise, Tilly swung from vine to vine, careful not to wake the sleepy sloths hanging nearby. Then she saw it: a giant capybara, chewing on some grass by the riverbank.
Tilly had never seen one so close before.
“Hello!” she chirped, not scared at all. “What are you doing?”
The capybara blinked slowly. “Eating breakfast,” he said. “Want some grass?”
Tilly giggled. “No thank you. I like fruit and bugs.”
They talked for a while. The capybara told her about the river, the fish that swam in the water, and the crocodile who lived far downstream (and who not to visit).
By the end of the day, Tilly had made a new friend—and learned more than she ever had just sitting in the trees.
